History

It is hard to pinpoint the beginning of tacos, but their origins should be those of the tortilla which is the Mesoamerican version of a flatbread, an unleavened type of bread that was first discovered by Mesopotamians and that has being a milestone for several cultures around the world.

The tortilla differs from other flatbreads because its main ingredient is maize flour instead of wheat. There is evidence that tortillas have being around in Oaxaca as early as 1500 BC and rest assure that even at that time someone somewhere was filling his tortilla with other edibles.

In the map on the left it is marked the state where each style of tacos was created and eated the most, even though now a days, they are eaten all over the country and even in other places.

On October 4th, the National Taco Day is celebrated!! Another great excuse to eat all the tacos you want!!
